Radiation Protection Materials for Lead Aprons
Deutsch Medical offer three different radiation protection materials that assure maximum protection against harmful radiation exposure in hazardous work environments. Each protection material has its own particular benefits in terms of radiation protection, functionality, application and cost. All three materials conform with all major global standards AS/ NZS 4543.3:2000 (Australia/ NZ), IEC 61331-3:2014 (International), ASTM F2547 (USA) and DIN 6867-2 (Germany), independently tested and certified against a full range of energy levels; 60 to 150 kVp.
The area density (weight information) of the radiation protection materials is measured in grams per square metre which is the most accurate way of defining weight and comparing it to other brands. We believe that the weight of the radiation protection material is just as important as the protection level when choosing the right lead apron, and that the weight should be verified by an independent body. For this reason, our manufacturer has requested that the independent test laboratory publishes the area density of their supplied sample on the Test Report provided. This is your guarantee that radiation protective products you buy from Deutsch Medical are as stated on the product label.

Lead (L) is specifically suitable for radiation protection because of its high absorption and attenuation of x-ray photons. Lead is often considered the budget choice. However, lead is a heavy option and can cause occupational health issues (1) when worn for a long time. Therefore, Lead is only an ideal protection when in use for shorter periods of time.

Light Lead Plus (LLP) consists of lead combined with antimony. This material is lighter than “lead-only” apparel (up to 285 Grams per square metre).
Light Lead Plus is considered the economical choice for a garment which provides optimum radiation protection and is comfortable to wear when in use for short and medium periods of time.

Supreme Lead Free (SLF) is a revolutionary protective material which consists of two fundamental materials: Bismuth and Antimony, which protect throughout the full voltage spectrum required as per the most recent regulatory requirements. While antimony will shield the transmission of scatter radiation between 60-110 kVp, Bismuth will block the transmission of lower level scatter or fluorescent radiation between 50-90 kVp.
Supreme Lead-Free is the lightest material on the market, while offering optimum protection when considering current testing standards(2). Combined with the ergonomic design of our apparel, you will be wearing the most protective and comfortable safety apron even during long procedures.

Fabric Materials and Colour Options
Deutsch Medical offers three different fabric materials: Flex-DC and Easy-Clean Spangly and Standard Nylon. All lead aprons come with a soft nylon lining for additional comfort.
Flex-DC: Keeping you comfortable and flexible in your movements
The Flex-DC fabric is a specifically formulated material unique to our manufacturer AmRay, which gives the wearer a lightweight flexible fabric that is hard-wearing and durable. Its flexible proprieties afford the wearer complete comfort and ease of movement, avoiding unwelcome bulging from bending, sitting or leaning. A polyurethane coating provides an easy-clean surface to avoid staining and provides high standards of hygiene.
Easy-Clean ‘Spangly’: Making it easier to keep your apron clean.
In addition to the Flex-DC features, the Spangly fabric contains an additional coating to create an easy-clean surface resistant to staining.

With an integrated iOS and Android application, you can retrieve the full garment history by scanning the QR code on our A-Track label that is fitted to any of our lead aprons. After scanning you can easily see the lead garment’s full details, including a full history of past, current and future inspections. If you are a smart phone user you can still input the unique code into any web browser and retrieve results via the cloud-based A-Track software.
